The Laboratory of Molecular Modeling and Chemistry of Natural compounds at Sechenov University (established within the framework of the Priority 2030 program) is working on the creation of a drug for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One of the options proposed by scientists is to develop such a medicine based on plant raw materials. An effective drug for the treatment of PTSD will not cause addiction and dependence. There are no analogues of such a drug in Russia today.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a pathological reaction to mental trauma. Such a disorder can develop in anyone who has experienced, for example, an accident, an accident, physical or sexual violence, the loss of a loved one, a serious health problem or traumatic events at work.

Severe experiences of traumatic experiences often manifest themselves in the form of nightmares, obsessive thoughts and memories, as well as in so-called flashbacks, when some trigger – sound, image, smell – causes a person to relive the situation. All this has a negative impact on health and seriously impairs the quality of life. Therefore, the development of a drug for post-traumatic stress disorder that does not cause dependence in patients is very relevant.

Scientists from the laboratory of Molecular Modeling and Chemistry of natural compounds, which was opened this year as part of the strategic academic leadership program “Priority 2030” together with an industrial partner, NPO BIOTECH ALLIANCE, will create such a drug.

At the first stage, scientists from the laboratory of molecular Modeling and chemistry of natural compounds will create an analogue of a foreign drug that has shown effectiveness in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, said Alexander Nosyrev, director of the Institute of Molecular Theranostics (BMI) of the Scientific and Technological Park of Biomedicine at Sechenov University. To do this, specialists are developing a technique for extracting active substances from medicinal plants. The created drug will not cause dependence and addiction. At the same time, he will have significant medical potential. For example, it can help people suffering from nervous disorders, panic attacks, epilepsy and other diseases. There are no analogues of such a drug on the Russian market today.

According to Alexander Nosyrev, at the next stage of the project, scientists will use molecular modeling to develop digital counterparts of therapeutic targets. This will allow us to calculate new molecular structures that will surpass the pharmacological properties of natural substances in their properties. That is, we will already be talking about the full development cycle of an original drug for the treatment of PTSD.

In the future, scientists plan to create medicinal compounds based on substances that make up plants from the Altai Territory.

“There are many medicinal plants growing in this unique region,– explained Alexander Nosyrev. – In the chemical laboratory of our university, we can modify molecules and develop innovative drugs that will open the way for the treatment of many diseases. Including such socially significant ones as cancer, pathologies of the cardiovascular system, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes mellitus and others.”
