“Christie’s cheated With Da Vinci”: how to assemble a collection of works by old masters / by Forbes Life
Real collectors avoid high-profile auctions. They prefer secrecy / by Forbes
The Old Masters Gallery is the first antique gallery of Western European art in Russia. It was organized in 1999 by M.E. Perchenko
Mikhail Efremovich Perchenko is the president of the Guild of Appraisers, one of the leading collectors of Western European art in Russia and abroad. Its extensive collection of Northern Gothic and Renaissance art provides insight into the most significant achievements in the fields of painting, sculpture, furniture and applied art.
The high level of objects presented in the collection, including 120 polychrome wooden sculptures from the 13th to the 17th centuries – the most impressive collection, which neither the collections of domestic and foreign museums nor private collections can compare with, allowed in 2011 to organize and with great success to hold the exhibition “Art of the Northern Gothic and Renaissance. Paintings, sculptures, and art furniture from the collection of M. E. Perchenko” in the main halls of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. The curators of this exhibition were: Director of the State Museum of Fine Arts I. A. Antonova and Head of the Department of Western European Art V. A. Sadkov. The western curator of the exhibition, Hans Nieuwdorp (Holland), together with M. E. Perchenko, carried out extensive scientific work on the dating and identification of wooden sculptures from this private collection. A serious scientific catalog was released for the exhibition, reproducing most of the most significant works from the collection.
M. E. Perchenko has been teaching at the Institute of Art Business for many years on the topic of “Collecting and collecting” and has a large number of students who continue their scientific activities on this topic.
As Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Confederation of Collectors and Art Dealers, as well as head of the Guild of Art Appraisers for more than 20 years, M. E. Perchenko has been involved in organizing and holding various art exhibitions and events in Russian regional art museums under the auspices of the Confederation.
Mikhail Perchenko is a regular participant in the Moscow antique salons in the Central House of Artists (currently in Gostiny Dvor) and, of course, enjoys great authority and respect in Russian art circles.
It is important to note that all the works that were bought on the European art market, brought to Russia forever, are cultural property of the Russian Federation and are not subject to re-export. This is the main merit of M. E. Perchenko before the national culture.
Collector M. Perchenko actively cooperates with Russian museums and, at their request, provides works for temporary exhibitions, exhibitions and other cultural events.
Initially, the gallery operated in a specially created space in a separate building near the Baltschug Hotel. Later, the gallery continued its work on its own site at 8 Malaya Molchanovka, where it is still located under the brand name Perfectum ART.
The KINO Gallery, created by E. R. Yureneva
It was the first private gallery of contemporary art to organize solo exhibitions of Francisco Infante, Anatoly Zverev, Dmitry Krasnopevtsev, Dmitry Alekseev (together with the British Council), and Tatiana Chernova with the State Tretyakov Gallery. Since then, more than four hundred exhibitions of contemporary art have been held both on its own site and in other exhibition institutions.
The first plans of the Gallery were carried out in the exhibition halls of the Cinema Center on Krasnaya Presnya. By now, the Gallery has gained wide fame and steady authority due to its active creative activities, major exhibition projects and programs implemented.
In its activities, the Kino Gallery covers a wide range of contemporary artistic phenomena. The Gallery’s strategy assumes the most complete reflection of artistic processes and trends in modern Russian art, which includes both the artistic heritage of the 60-80’s and contemporary art. The Kino Gallery was one of the first to hold exhibitions of works by nonconformist artists who gained international fame and entered the history of world art.
Elena Rostislavovna Yureneva, art critic, member of the Union of Artists of Russia, is the artistic director of the CINEMA Gallery. E. R. Yureneva graduated from the Art History Department of the Lomonosov Moscow State University Faculty of History, and later completed postgraduate studies at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute (Faculty of Art and Graphics). All these years of study, E. Yureneva worked first at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (jr. n.s.), then at the Manege Central Exhibition Hall (art. n.s.), later she worked for more than 15 years as deputy head of the scientific propaganda Department of the Central House of Artists (CHA). In the late 1990s, she participated in the organization and activities of the Art Culture Center, which was later reformed into Art MIF (Moscow International Art Fairs). As Deputy Chairman of the Management Board and head of the art department, she organized three major international fair projects (at the Manege Central Exhibition Hall).
Among the most important projects, Lidia Masterkova’s first solo exhibition in Russia should be noted, as well as the exhibition of the world-famous photographer Helmut Newton, which received a great public response.
Many Russian and foreign artists work with the gallery on an ongoing basis. Also, over the past two years, the KINO Gallery has created two documentaries: “Andrey Bisti. Irony” and “Andrey Kolkutin. The harmony of distortion.” Serious in terms of the selection of exhibitors (modern authors) and the level of organization, the four-part project “East. North. West. South” in the Small Manege.
The KINO Gallery often participates in various charity events. These were the charity auction at the Radisson Slavyanskaya Hotel (1997), the charity auction “Faith, Hope, Love” (1998), organized by the Profile magazine. Transfer of the painting from the exhibition to the Prince Michael of Kent Charitable Foundation (2015).
